Abstract
It is widely accepted that business has a critical role to play in the achievement of the SDGs. The SDGs cannot be fully accomplished by any company or government on its own and the greatest impact can be achieved as organizations create focus to contribute to the most relevant SDGs based on their activities. To determine its strategic focus, Corbion performed an SDG impact assessment consisting of 4 steps: 1) Product impact assessment. In this step, 11 relevant impact areas for Corbion products were identified and linked to SDG targets. For each of the identified impact areas, internal and external documentation has been collected and reviewed by internal experts to confirm that there is sufficient evidence supporting the impact of a product or product group. 2) Supply chain impact assessment to identify opportunities to increase positive impact and to reduce negative impacts, based on the Chemical Sector SDG roadmap [1] . 3) SDG mapping and prioritization. To determine the material SDGs impacted by products, sales data from all products were analyzed to determine the revenue contribution tied to impact areas and the percentage of revenues that contribute positively to the SDGs. The material SDGs impacted by the supply chain were identified based on Corbion’s materiality matrix. 4) Target setting. For the material SDGs, specific targets have been defined as part of the company strategy and progress toward the achievement included in the annual report Based on this assessment, Corbion has chosen to focus on SDG 2, SDG 3 and SDG 12 as the goals on which it can make the most significant impact. As a target, Corbion aims for 80% of its revenues to contribute to these SDGs by 2030. [1] https://docs.wbcsd.org/2018/07/Chemical_Sector_SDG_Roadmap.pdf
