Japfa Ltd through its subsidiary PT Japfa Comfeed Indonesia Tbk has been embracing over 10,000 local poultry farmers in Indonesia to produce commercial live birds through a partnership programme that provides a substantial socioeconomic contribution to the farmers. Japfa participated as one of the road testers for the revised guidelines of Social Life Cycle Assessment (UNEP), representing the first application on the poultry sector in Southeast Asia. The study aims to identify the potential social impacts of the farmer partnership programme with the scope of “cradle-to-gate”, starting from the basic farming supplies production (e.g. feed, Day-Old-Chick) to the farm gate. The stakeholders assessed in this study were farmers, workers (Japfa and farmer’s workers), local community of farmers, society and consumers. Inventory data were primarily collected through interviews and surveys. The impact assessment was conducted following the Reference Scale S-LCIA approach where secondary data, sourced from relevant national regulations or practice standards, were used to construct the reference. In total, 19 impact subcategories and 70 inventory indicators were assessed. The results show that the social performance was relatively in compliance and progress beyond compliance on farmer partners, Japfa’s workers, local community, society and consumers. However, the assessment has identified areas for improvement in some of the subcategories in the stakeholder category workers of farmer partners. These results provide a view that the social performance is satisfactory when there are a direct relationship and control from the Company. At the moment, the Company has no influence on the relationship between the farmer partners and their workers. A further study is recommended to further explore the kind of social handprint that could be applied to improve social performance and its influencing factors.
